Default heater on my 98, and rear axle ?

Hello I am just wondering about a couple Items my 98 heater sometimes kicks on and sometimes doesn't It does not work at all when sitting still however when I am driving especially going up hills it likes to kick on it seems like different angles make the heater work and once in a blue moon in will just kick in. Does this sound like a classic blend door problem. Also I got stuck in the snow last night and when I was spinning the tires the back drivers side tire I could hear a bearing or something just spinning and the tire not spinning. Any thoughts on what that noise could be. It seems to run fine on the pavement but I am wondering if I wrecked the axle or something on that side.

Thanks
