Key locked in 1998 Explorer...any suggestions?
Hi folks -
Newbie here. I have a 1998 Explorer Eddie Bauer that I purchased as a spare car in August.
A few days ago, I left for vacation, and gave the key (the only one I had) to my girlfriend (she wanted to use it while I was away). When she was done using the truck, she placed the key under the floor mat, and never bothered telling me this.
As you may have surmised, I locked the door.
The car DOES have the keyless entry pad on the door, but I do not know the code. And again, I don't have another key for the car (this will teach me to get a spare key made up).
Is there any way that I can find the code for the keypad? I've seen some postings stating that it's on the back of the radio...but again, I can't get into the car.
Short of busting out the driver's window, and making her pay for a new one, is there anything I can do?
Thanks,
Steve

There are a couple of alternatives.
Call a Ford dealer and they will require the vin no. etc., and I believe they can get the key code and make a replacement key.
Call a locksmith.
Both are not cheap, but I think cheaper than breaking the window and having the problems that come with that procedure.

Hanky is right,,
take a copy of the registration, or insurance card, proof of ownership (not always asked for) and go into the parts dept. They'll look up the 'as built' data per your VIN for the specific key configuration. They can punch you a key (not PATS) that will open the doors.. Only takes a couple minutes. Should be pretty cheap too, but you'll be limited to only opening the doors and turning the ignition ON. Won't start the vehicle....

No no no...A lock smith is not needed. Grab yourself a 2x4...now it’s notwhat you think...but it’s an option! Ok ok back to business, cut it with amiter saw at 90 degrees or so you have a wedge, Place between the roof and doorand ever so slightly take a mallet and pry the door just enough to gain accessto the locking mechanism.
PS, you may want to perform this on the passenger side, as if you tear the weather striping....I performed the said actions on my explorer with no issues. Cheers...
