Default Questions on '97 Explorer 4WD

My g/f has the explorer but will soon be getting a new vehicle and I'm going to turn the explorer into my trail-rig. I was wonderingabout the 4WD system on the vehicle though because the dial says "Auto" "4High" "4Low"...I'm guessing this isn't the typical system but does Auto mean 2WD unless it senses loss of traction and then it will but it 4WD by itself??? Also I put the truck in 4high and 4low yesterday just to make sure that it works (she has never engaged) and I couldn't ever get it back to 2wd or "Auto" the lights on the dash stayed lit until I completely turn off the vehicle and restarted...

Thanks,
Kevo
