Default Rear diff fluid change 2002 Explorer

I'm planning on changing the rear diff fluid in my 02 Explorer. When I look at the pan it looks like there's a white sealer on the drain plug and a red sealer on the fill plug. Anyone have any idea what type of sealer this is supposed to be and if it's really needed? The shop manual doesn't say anything about sealing the plugs.

Thanks for any help in advance.

When re-installing the plugs, a couple wraps of regular teflon tape will work just fine, then snug the plug. The sealer used by Ford on these just makes installation easier on the assembly line.
