Default 1985 Ford 4.9 YFA Carter single barrel

Hey all,

I have a couple of questions. First, I put a carburetor kit on my 1985 F150. It is a single barrel Carter YFA. the rebuild went fine and the thing idles much better and initial acceleration is fine. However, under heavy acceleration, it seems to be a little "starved" of petrol and the whole truck shudders. If I ease up to speed slowly, this all but eliminates the problem. What could this be?
My second question is if I can run an earlier model YFA in this thing without the feedback solenoid. The earlier model came without this apparatus and I can get one fairly cheap.

Thanks for your help!

have you checked your timing? could be that simple. with the carb rebuilt you may have closed a vacuum leak and now your timing's off. what were your initial settings on the carb to get it going?

didn't change the timing when I did the carb kit. It could be the accelerator pump as well on the thing. It seems to work fine on the bench. I could start messing with the timing and make it a lot worse. Do you know if I can use the older carb without the electronic parts?

Two things on this carb..first, did you set the power valve correctly on it. If not it will lean out on accel. That is the rod setting. Second, the feedback solenoid on these are bad about causing stumble and leanout conditons. Especially if you are accelling and it shifts gears, it will stumble about then. Just two things I can remember from rebuilding 100's of them.
