Default 89 302 2wd atx problems.

in park and neutral the motor idles pretty high, what could cause this? i have allready sprayed brake clean on whatever vacuum connections i could get to. idle drops when i shift it to drive or reverse.

also, i suspect that my front u joint is going as whenever the truck is in drive or reverse and at a standstill, i hear a popping noise occasionally. it's isolated within the driveline and mouder up front cuz of the echoing effect with the sound traveling through the driveshaft.

also the whole truck shakes pretty bad whenever it upshifts into 3rd gear. also shakes really bad when i'm slowing down and it tries to downshift. i'm having to throw it into neutral so the tranny won't shake the truck so bad.

thanks!.

One way to check your u-joints is to block the front wheels, shift the truck into neutral, and jack the rear wheels off of the ground. Then, go under the truck and spin the drive shaft by hand. Also, try to wiggle the drive shaft near each of the u-joints. If there is play, you need to replace the u-joint. Be careful, since the blocks on the front wheels are what is stopping the vehicle from rolling away on you - or over you.

As far as the shaking goes, does it do this at a certain rpm range? Does it do it in any other gear? Can you feel the engine shake at all when the truck is in neutral?

i can't really tell the RPM's as there is no tach in the dash.

could bad motor and trans mouts cause the vibrations and noises? cuz the tranny moved a little when i grabbed and shook the front u joint and driveshaft.

Yes, bad motor mounts will cause excessive shaking. Check them out.

Were your u-joints bad, or is this all due to the same issue?
