89 F150 Questions
I'm looking at an 89 XLT. 160K, 5.0, Four Speed, 4WD, RC/SB. No pwr. accessories, A/C doesn't work, and neither does the CC, or the rear gas tank.
1. Its a 4spd. Are those over-drive trannies?
2. There is rust on the rear wheel wells, about the size of a dollar. Could a body shop cut it out, bondo it, and permantenly fix it? If so, how much $$?
3. If I test drive it, how can I test to see if the 4WD work. It has manuel hubs.
4. Would anybody have a link to a website that would list all the specs and options?
Thanks a lot.
Also, feel free to add your toughts in general about the truck.

1.) It should have OD if it is an auto tranny.
2.) Of coarse a body shop can fix it, but the question is how much. I don't know that.
3.) Take it to a parking lot, put the 4WD on (have to lock the hubs unless it has auto locks), then turn the wheel and press the gas. You'll feel the truck hop around if it is working. I wouldn't do this too long on dry pavement, but you will notice it right away.
4.) Try these:
http://www.automotive.com/1989/12/fo...ons/index.html
http://www.motortrend.com/cars/1989/...ons/index.html
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Sp...&trimid=-1
The last one is the best.
I recognize your name (or one like it) from the Mustang Forums. Are you the same guy?

Itis a 4spd manual. I reaserched it more, and it does not have OD. They came with 4spd, 5spd,or 4spd autos around that time period.
I am kinda turned off by the lack of OD, but it will not be a daily driver. I going to look at it tomrrow just to see. Can't drive it( the guys at work all day), but he gave me directions to the parking lot its in, so i probably stop and see what the rust looks like. If it were only a 5spd manual, it would be perfect.
Yes, sameon the Mustang Forums. You seem to have a nice collections of Fords, especially the 94 GT.
Thanks again.
Also, here the link to add. Let me know what you think.

Looks good. Price isn't so bad for the shape it's in. Around here, people will pay $1000 for a p.o.s. as long as it has 4WD.
It must be in the south or somewhat south, because you can see though the wheel wells on my truck!

It doesnt' sound so bad to me. From experience with my '90, the OD is nice, but the truck has difficulties while in OD going up hills and against the wind. As a result, if you want to keep speed you have to be out of OD in those conditions anyway. Don't expect it to be easy on gas either, with or without OD. The truck does have 180K+ on it, but the engine is running quite well. It is easily capible of handling loads, pulling buddies out of the pickers, etc. So, you can take that into account for what it's worth.
It does sound like a nice truck for the age and such.
