89F150 won't start

Hello all my problem started Suddenly. One day I drove it all.was fine the next day it would die when I put it in gear. Now it won't even start. I've changed the fuel filter cleaned the valve which I believe is the IAC. Checked the fuel pump ,vaccum and still no luck any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting any spark? Sounds like it may be an ignition module failure.

My ignition module checked OK. Replaced coil cap and rotor. Still no luck.
Any ideas?

Do you have a working test lite?

rick32 07-29-2011 09:27 AM

Yes I have one

OK, with the test lite hooked to a good ground,
1. With the key turned on you should have 12 volts coming into the coil.
2. when cranking with the test lite on the other coil primary terminal you should get a pulsing light showing that the pick up coil in the dist is working to send a signal to the ign module to generate a spark through the coil.
3. remove one of the spark plug wires and if you have an old spark plug place the plug wire on it and lay the plug shell on a grounded portion of the engine. Then crank the engine and watch the plug for spark. You will either have spark or not.
Depending on the result you get will determine your next step.
If you didn't have the expected results in the first 2 steps let us know . OK ?

OK so I couldn't find my test light but I found a multimeter. I have 12 volts with ign on but no change in value from the other side of connector when cranked.does this tell us anything? Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's a spark issue since it starts with Carb cleaner sprayed in the throttle body .any experts out there?

When you turn the key to the "on" position, do you hear the fuel pump priming? Did you check fuses for the fuel pump?

rick32 08-21-2011 10:58 AM

I can hear the pump. A long stream. Of fuel releases when the key is cranked and the valve on the engine is pressed (looks like the tire inflator valve)
