I have a 4.6 L V8 in my 02 Supercrew 3:7s axle, Ihave installed a K&N 770 intake system and am looking at other upgrades to assist me in pulling at 26 ft travel trailer , weighing (empty) at 4900 Ibs. Looking for advice please

Depending on how much you want to spend the next best bang for your buck and performance is a chip followed by helping itbreath a little better with a less restrictive exhaust system.

For towing the next best you could do (if you don't already have them) are accessoy coolers for engine oil, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.

 

P.S. If it's a stickshift trans. never mind the tranny cooler.

 

OK, good stuff. Should have mentioned that it has the OME tow package, so I suppose exhaust and chip is the next. I have not have the truck dyno'd since the install of the 770 system but what is everyone's best guess on hp increase? Does anyone think the truck can't handle this weight?

 

Did the OEM tow package come with a hitch and any info. on tow ratings? Maybe the owners manual might help some? Exhaust is always good to have moderately open but is 10 to 20 times as important to open up with anything that came from the factory with catalytic converters. If your converters do begin dirtying up then at least you won't be let sit so fast. Don't go crazy big on the pipes though - a little exhaust pressure is a good thing. I'd suggest bumping up the tube size 1/4 to 1/2 inch. If you have 2-1/2" pipe I'd keep it the same. Anything over that gets to be a hassle to replace when the exhaust eventually goes bad. If you want to spend a couple extra bucks try stainless pipes (they last longer). You have a relatively higher-geared rear for towing heavy. Maybe you could invest in a Hensley arrow towing system to cut the push/pull effect. That and balance the braking that the trailer actuates just slightly before.

Thanks for your thoughts, the truck has all the tow package by Ford, and is rated based on the many manuals and websites to be around 6700 - 6600 Ibs. So I have the big tranny cooler, power steering cooler, etc. Just wanting to know if you think the truck can do the job, some have said it would. just looking for some reasurance from gold old fashion truck owners I suppose. I look and the hensley arrow stuff too

With fuel injection on the engine it can likely handle it a little better. I was just considering power outputs as far as older carbureted engines - in rating your motor is smaller than a 5.0Liter engine which is a 302. 4.6 might be a way of saying 260 or 289 - I'm just estimating. I think I recalled the 289 is 4.8Liters? And in their day 260 was not a powerful engine block as far as a carbureted motor. However with injection the horsepower is boosted and with a fairly low rear I'm sure it would work. I would have to say - a lot relies on the transmission type and gearing. An overloaded automatic will tend to slip - whereas an overloaded stick will tend to burn and break pieces.

 

Excellent, sorry for the delay in my response to you. I have since then installed a engine PSI guage as well as tranny temp guage, sending unit is in the line to cooler from engine. So I can keep an eye on things below while towing. I will really know more once I get in on the road and start trailering in about 28 more sleeps!
