Default code readers

I have a 300-6 in a 90' f-150 that gets like half the milage it did a few months ago. It's had the usual tuneup parts put on and I think it got worse. I was wondering if I can make a code reader out of a paperclip like you could on the older gm tbi stuff? Or was ford just way ahead of it's time???

I don't know about the paper clip, but I know you can get an actual code reader for your vehicle for about $35 at Advanced Auto Parts.
