Default Gm distributor ,in a 5.8 Ford engine ???

My young neighbor bought a 1987 Fi50 Lariat.
Great condition,...but it keeps dying on him.
All fuel system has been either cleaned,or replaced.
New fuel pump.
It has a Holley 4-barrel,that has the accelerator pump leaking.
BUT,the weirdest thing,is that it seems to have a distributor from a small block Chevy,in it !
I'm 65 yrs old,and never heard of this !!
Is this even possible ??
I take it ,it was done to eliminate the module ??
