Default High RPM's and Check Engine Light, Please Help

In the morning I got the brake light and engaged and disengaged the emergency brake and it seemed fine. After work I started it and both the brake light and check engine light was on. The RPM's seemed to go in between 800-1200 so as I was driving it the RPM's were around 1100 when the gas was off and so it was almost as if you were in cruise control but slowing down very slightly. It seems to run well when I give it gas.

Any ideas what this could be?

Vacuum leak. First thought. Sprits around with a can of WD-40 while running. If WD-40 is 'sucked' into a vac leak you may hear an rpm spike. Don't saturate the electrics or electronics. Can also use carb cleaner, but some carb cleaner em-brittles plastic...not good.

Stuck Throttle, Sticky throttle cable or quadrant that is pulled/pushed by the cable and opens the butterfly plate?

If not that then the dreaded 'engine control' electric and electronic crap...
Are you driving through SALT? That shorts out all kinds of switch gears.

So not to be flip but "hold it closer to the telephone so I can look at it"...consider

fuel enrichments,
cold start valve,
air mass,
air temperature,
throttle sensing position do dad,
injector control,
stuck open injector? She'd be pumping out white vaporized gasoline fog.

Something is letting too much air/fuel past the throttle plate, and that regulates the rpm's.

I honestly have no idea when it comes to this stuff.

Whats the tail pipe and exhaust smell tell you? Black, smell too rich? Air cleaner?

skip.

Hi Scott,
It would help if you could tell us the year , model and engine size.
