interchangeability of 8th generation 5 speed and 9th generation 5 speed

I have a 1995 F150 with 5 speed and 4.9 l engine. Will will the 5 speed from a 1988 F150 also with a 4.9 l engine bolt in Without modification? What modifications would be required if any? Thanks!

Can we ask why you want to use an older trans?

Sometimes it is more cost effective to have the original trans repaired.
