Default low volts

I have 1992 f150. The amp/volt meter on the dash has a scale from 8 to 18 and the meter usually reads close to the 18 volt end of the scale. On Saturday I noticed that it didnt move very far from the "8" end but still in the "normal" range. I replaced the alternator about two years ago. I am assuming that the alternator may be defective but before I buy a replacement I wanted to get some ideas. Does this sound like an alternator problem or should I be looking for something else. Thank you. tb

The ol' alternator test is to fire-up the truck and dis-connect the battery while running. If it quits, then the alternator is probably bad.
