Removing Serpentine Belt on 1999 V-6
My dad has a 1999 Ford F-150 with a V-6. The serpentine belt needs to be replaced. Now I changed one on my Ranger and there was a 3/8th square on the tension arm that you can put a ratchet or breakbar in to take the tension off the belt and replace it. I don’t see that on this vehicle. How is the tension taken off to remove the belt? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!
Sorry... Missed that part of your post (V6) and read only about the 'no hex' in the tensioner.. thats why I assumed a V6.. Been a LONG day! For the 4.2 put a wrench on the tensioner/idler and rotate it to release the tension....

Thanks for your help. I feel foolish aboutasking a question like this anyway. When engines just had fan belts and an adjutment it was much simplier. Any way I did put a socket and breakbar on the tensioner and it wouldn't budge.Yep i was turning it in the correct direction. It did seem that the boltmoved some but the tensioner didn't move.I sprayed some LPS II on the spring tensioner hopefully it will losen it up some. I fear that the tensioner is rusted stiff.
Should be able to grab the belt and give it a tug.. You should see the tensioner rotate some.. Or pull 'up' on the belt and try and rotate the tensioner at the same time to gain enough slack to pull the belt....
