Usually I grind and sand the bad metal and a little around the edges. Then I usually take primer and seal the metal (unless I'm welding in a panel) then I allow it to dry. Next I get a fiberglass body putty like Mar-Glass and lay it on (especially from the back side if possible) and let it dry. ThenI take a very rough file and knock out any lumps on the surface and sand it smooth (first with 40 grit then 80 grit then fine papers if I care that much). LastI lay another coat of primer on (inside and out). Then paint to match.

You can just get repair panels at your local parts store and do it right if you plan to keep it for a few years. It does require some welding and seam blending. Even if you try to sell it it will look better if there isn't a lot of filler to be found. If you just cover it with any kind of filler you will be doing the same thing in 2 years.
