Straight pipe question
Couple of questions i own a 77 ford f150 4x4 with a 400 i have glasspacks on them now pipe to glasspacks and nothing after that. Wondering if i should straight pipe it to sound better? I have true duals on it. And if i put turn down tips on them would that make any diffrence? Dont really mind for the "popping" from the glasspacks.Wanting it to be louder sound more raspy but don't want a fancy muffler cause i take this thing mudding and stuff. This is what is sounds like now YouTube - 77 ford f150
But its currently lifted now with KC lights up front and KM2 tires. Any advice is appreciated

If you run them past the rear bumper, it will give it a mellower sound in the cab, but cackle really good for anyone outside. On those, using turn downs will not affect the sound. If you turn them down in front of the tires, you will still have the same sound inside.
I thought about putting them in front of the rear tires not back by the bumper cause i do a lot of off roading and severe angles would bend them tips. And behind the tires wont work cause i kick up a lot of stuff when mudding and stuff. Thats why i have them tucked under the bed for now. Thinking before the rear tires would be ok?
I have a '70 Bronco with a 302. I put long tube headers on it with glass packs and have turn downs on them right before the rear axle. I use it for off roading, too. If I had to describe the sound, I would say "fawking awesome." Last spring when I took it mudding with some friends they told me it sounded "fawking awesome" as well. It'll wake up the dead, and I think it would sound even better on a 400.
Just my $0.02...

Yeah, I was going to put stainless pipes out the back that I took off my Mustang, but then I decided to go with turn downs for many of the same reasons you are, not to mention it's cheap, easy, and loud. In fact, I wanted to put the glass packs basically right off the collectors, but because of the skid plate on my transfer case I had to put about a 12in pipe on first. After that it's glass packs then turn downs. I'm really happy with how it turned out.
What makes you think you will be breaking bolts? Are the bolts for the exhaust manifold a bit rusted? I imagine if it is all original equipment that would be a problem. You'll have to get some PB Blaster and a broken bolt stud extractor.

That sounds like a good idea. I dont have a skid plate i used to but thats another story lol. I just might do that. But yeah my exhaust manifold bolts are rusted pretty good i have drove it thru water and mud. Who knows it might break free i dont know. Previous owner i know him he dropped the 400 in there so it just might break free to but headers on there. What is a good brand to get? So basically the tips will be under the cab still that would be loud!! Awesome!! I will have to see what set up i can do
Another cool thing about this setup is that at idle it isn't at all deafening. Kinda nice at a stop light when the unsuspecting car next to you gets the full exposure once the light turns green. It's good for a laugh.
There are plenty of good brands out there for headers. If you want to buy new, you can look at Summit Racing. Otherwise, a quick craigslist.com search or a trip to a swap meet coul get you what you need.
BTW, you may want to put that skid plate back on there, but I like how you took it off...

That part i like disturbing the peace a lil bit lol. Yeah at idle i dont want it to be deafening. But a shot blip of the skinny pedal will wake the dead lol i like that!! Good idea to check craigslist or swap meet i will see what i can find. Yeah i do need to put another on back on there. Lets just say a large rock won that battle!! Along with a lil mud as icing on the cake!! LOL!! Looked under my truck today and i see where i want to have the tips dump. Just wondering if i want them to dump under the cab or just after the cab about 2 feet after idk but i will see i can always add pipe or take away pipe.
Very true; you can always change the length.
BTW, if your differential is still working I'd say the battle with the rock is a draw. The cover did what it was meant to do - sacrifice it's life for the greater good.
