Ticking and Blue Smoke
OK, here it is I just bought a 98 F150 4X4 4.6L V8 with 197,000 miles. There is a loud ticking comming from the passenger side of the engine its loud it stays loud going slow, fast, stopped any ideas. Also when I first crank it, it put out a tramendious amount of blue smoke. The engine also wants to die when I put it into drive and reverse. It runs strong there is only a little hesitation when I first accelerate, but it will get up and go quickley. Can any one help me. I can change parts my self but I dont have the time to fool with it. Me personally I think its lifters sticking or so I hope, and as for the blue smoke I know its from oil getting into the cylinder should I just do a complete gasket change or what. Please someone help ME. THNX
It sounds something like a bad valve or a valve that isn't seating well or something along that line. If it is a valve that isn't seating well, you can try running Sea Foam in you gas ans see if it burns away deposits that may be causing a bad seal for the valve. It is a cheap way to start.
Can you tell if the sound is coming from the top half or bottom half of the engine?

I don't know that. It is designed to be run in the oil, gas, transfer case, differential, vacuum lines, etc. It goes through and gives a good cleaning. When run in the gas, it will clean the tank all the way through to the valves.

It may or may not work for you, but it is a very in expensive and effortless fix compared to taking the head off and re-seating the valves.

I am shocked. I used some seafoam on my engine, and the results are amazing. The ticking is gone. I noticed I have more power. I will swear by this product on any day. Thanks to all who recommended it.
