Best bet is get yourself a Haynes manual. It should take you step by step. You'll need two people for the clutch bleeding.

You are right, $1500.00 to do a clutch on that is ridiculous. Did you look for any other estimates?

$250 sounds a lot better than $1500, especially if you don't have to do the work for yourself!

I just got done with mine about a month ago. If you are going to put a clutch in it, you might as well replace the slave cylinder while the transmission is out.....about $70 at NAPA. Two bolts hold it in place, one line to remove at the bell housing (from the clutch master cylinder). There is a special tool for the quick disconnect on this line, also available at NAPA for about $7. you will have to bleed the master cylinder and it takes two to do it. One to work the clutch pedal, one to crack the bleed screw....just like bleeding brakes.

My Ford dealer wanted $1275....for labor+clutch+slave cylinder+master cylinder and line. As you say, if you are mechanical and have the tools, this is not a terrible job. I did mine in the garage, front tires on ramps. Remove the four bolts attaching drive shaft to the rear end (will require 12 point socket)...pull the drive shaft out of the transmission(be ready to catch oil that will run out or just drain the transmission before you start)...Support the transmission(with a jack)....remove bolts from center of crossmember from tailshaft support....remove the crossmember (6 bolts)....remove tailshaft support from transmission and exhaust pipe....disconnect electrical harnesses....remove starter....remove bellhousing bolts (the two at the top are the toughest)....remove line to slave cylinder at quick disconnect....take the exhaust loose at the manifolds(if you have the factory single exhaust and just allow it to sag)....remove the bolts that hold the shift boot to the floor and pull it up far enough to remove the three torx head bolts on the top of the shifter...pull the entire gear shifter(and shift boot) out of the top of the tranny...lower the jack supporting the tranny enough that the top of the transmission will clear the floor of the cab....slide tranny away from engine(there is enough room for the rear of the tranny to go over the sagging exhaust pipe that crosses over, you don't even have to put it on the floor. You now have enough room to replace the slave cylinder(new slave cylinder has new throwout bearing on it already) and room to get at the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and guide bearing. Replace parts and reassemble. Bleed the new slave cylinder and refill the tranny. Might have left a few steps out, but you will see what I might have missed.
