Default truck chugging under light load

2003 f150 5.4l eng with auto trans. the eng idles good, no hesitation the trans shifts fine. the problem is when i go up a slight grade that puts a light load on the eng the truck chugs the RPMs are not fluctuating the trans is not downshifting, no engine check lights. at its most severe times it feels like a standard trans in to high a gear for the RPMs is the best way i can describe it. The other problem I am having is the A/C defaults to defrost, I have the digital EATC auto climate controller. if i press the vent button it quickly switches to the vent however if i press another button it switches to defrost the ac works just blows out the defrost. I have checked the vacuum and don't appear to have any leaks, when i pulled the line off the check valve by the battery even after sitting over night it still had vacuun. Sorry for the long post just tried to include all info.
