One or both of the switches housed in the door locking mechanisms, the part in the door where the lock contacts the striker plate, have gone bad. I had the same problem on 2001, and eventually wound up replacing the switches in both doors. "Sit down" when you get them or have them installed from the dealer.
I even tried to take them apart, no go, plastic and metal components, its a throw away design
I assume you have made sure that your rheostat switch is not turned up all the way.

I have the same issue. How do you determine which lock is bad?

And what do you mean by "sit down"?

Thanks!

Before you do any replacements, try spraying the exposed door latch assembly liberally with silcone ect. based lube.. The switches body hangs downwards mounted in the latch, with the spring loaded pin pointing upwards.. They like to collect dirt/debris on the pin and can stick or hang.. Spray 'downwards' into the latch from door opening, then open/close the door repeatedly.. Most times with some work they'll correct the lamp/ajar problem.. Then just use a lite spray as maintenance.. The door lamp/ajar switches are nothing more that a grounding pin housed into a switch to complete the ground leg of the lamp circuit.. A decent scan tool will tell which door switch is open or closed (handy for crew cabs), but other than a circuit ground check, about the only other way is to pull the door trim panel (easy job) and un plug the switch connector individually to cancel the lamp..

"Sit Down" in the context of how much the Ford Dealer charges for these door switches. You can figure out which door switch is bad by opening and closing each one after and when the interior light goes off. It will take some time as the delay timer will keep the light on for a couple of minutes. I found that if I use the remote door lock switch the light will go off immediately. In my case it was the passenger door switch that went bad. You might be able to spray some CRC contact cleaner inside the switch with the little straw that comes on the can. I did that and it worked for awhile and then the problem came back. I just got tired of messing with it and just replaced the switches and moved on.

Sit Down - thats what I had to do whenI bought my transmission temp sensor and my Mercron SP transmission fluid. I traded in a Toyota Tacoma because parts were expensive and hard to get LOL.

Anyway, if you dont want to do anything, why not just take the light bulb out so you dont run your battery down until you can get to it.

I had the same problem with my 99 F250. Someone told me about a tech tip so I tried it. I used Remington gun oil and sprayed it into the door latch that locks onto the pin mounted on the cab. I used plenty and it solved the problem. The funny thing was that the lights would turn off after I hit 15 mph and come back on once below 15. Kind of anoying while driving around town.
