6.0 2004 F-350
I bought a rebuilt2004 F-350 diesel which had been written off. When i bought the truck it had 22,000 kms on it.I payed $28,000 for itand ive had it two years now. It nowhas 65,000 kms on it. I havent had any issues with the engine at all. I baby this truck, i use fuel conditioner in it , i let it heat up, i let let the turbo cool down, i neverfloor it , i drive it as nice as i can, i dont tow with it,i take itin forits regular maintenance,it only sees pavement.i do nothing that is hard on it. Since this truck has been written off, it has no warranty on it .... so my question is what are the chances this is a good 6.0 engine? When do the turbo issues, oil leaksor head gasket issues or whatever other issues tend to flare up? Should i think about getting rid of this truck now??? or are thier actually some good 6.0 's out there? The truck is in very good shape, its rockgurded and has no paint chips. drives beautifully.Given the 6.0's bad repuation im not sure what i should do ??? If i sell i need to get $25,000 for it, any suggestions guys , thanx
If it's running well, cosmetically excellent, and has no leaks or performance issues and/or area's that are concerning at this point, why would you want to sell if you enjoy the truck and it's performance as it seems?? I could see if the power/torque of a diesel isn't needed, but 25K concidering the associated costs as wellmay be a tad hard to pick up another truck with the power capabilty, performance, andride of your current truck (IMO) unless trading backwards into another diesel or gasser..
Rebuilt meaning re-constructed salvage/wreck (written off), or was a replacement/reman. engine?
If the truck is running fine with no oil leaks or driveability problems ect.I personally would be overly concerned.. It's certainly not a bad idea to give it good quality service and at the specified intervals, but 'babying it' too much can actually cause problems as well.. These trucks can suffer for long sit times or short runs/idle timefor sticking/rusting VGT turbo vains, as well as excessive carbon/soot build up if not 'challenged' on a good pull or load once in a while..
Mine's at 60K, putting out close to 400HP and has since almost new,, with NO problems or leaks, head or oil.. I wouldn't give mine up.. Not that there hasn't been owners less fortunate, I've seen more than a few.. But,,, as 'simple insurance' I always monitor fluid levels, check for any leak indication during services (every 4K on mine) make sure it gets quality/clean fuel and driveit, sometimes pretty hard towing, sometimes for fun
..
There's always a chance that your 6.0 could fail (butnot all do) to one of the problems that come up, and in all reality not justFord/Navistar have problems with the modern high performance diesels..I would guess though, that at 'some' point during it's service life it will sweat some oil residue, but may not ever develop into a costly full blow leak.. Reading the help requests at the forum levels isn't a 'real' indication as to the percentage of 6.0's out working that don't limp into or show up into the service bays..
With there given history I can see being spooked, but if its well maintained and monitored, I personally wouldn'tbe too concerned, and a decision later could be made should something come up.. There arethe worst case repair senario's, but I've always found buying/selling (unless I'm building/reconstructing for profit) is a money losing buisness.. Could possibly loose more in asale, than a repair to the engine if it ever came to a premature failure....

was checking my engine over and noticed that rubber piece that joins the intercooler to the turbo intake pipe was wet ? didnt notice any wet spots or leaks anywhere else. why would that piece be wet?it just seemed odd,
i was thinking about installing the AFEstage2 cold air intake? has anyone had issues with the AFE cold air intakes?i have the banks monster exhaust and im sure the intake would appreciate the exhaust system but with the added powerarethere any issues which might arise? do the automatic trannies hold up to the increased power, is there any noticeabledifferencein power below 2500 rpm's?
There's an updated CAC coupler that has a internal liner.. The problem with the OE hose was that oil would weep from/through the hose braiding over time.. If cleaned off, oil droplets will appear on the hose with some run time...
