Default 88 f250 5.8 backfiring

I have a 1988 Ford F250 5.8 351 and the problem started a few days ago the check engine light would come on and it would stall if i didnt rev it up some and after a min it would be fine with the exception that it would backfire. after a hour or two the problem stoped and light went off. It repeated this a few days later, and the recent time it did it, it didnt cut off like it did before now its been on for going on three days and ive tried a few things and cant seem to find out what the problem is.

have you tried checking your error codes? It's a place to start, although you may be finding there's more information showing that actually depicts results of the problem than the problem itself.Begin by looking for the obvious wiring or fuel related issues.
