Default Bad Directional Switch in Column???

I know everyone says there are no stupid questions (just stupid people) but for the life of me I can't figure out why I can't get my front right directional/turn lamp to work when I lift the directional switch on the column up all the way past the detent. I can get the right directionals to work in "highway passing" mode, i.e., pushing the directional switch up just to the detent but not past it.

First instinct - check the fuses/relays. I checked the owners manual and found that none of the low amperage fuses/relays served the directionals. The owners manual lists the directionals as being high amperage relays in the engine compartment. OK, forget messing with high-amperage relays...maybe I've got a blown bulb. I checked the bulbs and they all checked out OK. I'm thinking that perhaps the problem is in the wiper/washer/directional/headlamp high beam multi-function switch??

When I push the right turn signal up past the detents (like waiting at an intersection to turn right) I get a rapid flash on the right rear turn signal and no flash on the right front. When I do the "highway passing" mode I can get both the front and the rear to flash at a normal (slower) interval.

Any ideas??? The only bulb I didn't think of checking was the reverse lamp...but I figure if that was blown it wouldn't affect the directionals and I still wouldn't be able to get the right directionals to operate in the "highway passing" mode. Hmmmm.......
