C6 transmission replacemnt options?

I'm new to the forum. For nearly 30 years, I've owned a 1984 f250 4x4. I've keep her alive despite living in the northeast and recently did a 1/2 frame off resto. to repair take care of some rotted cross members and some shackles that were spent. Presently, she has a fresh 351, an Edelbrock high-rise manifold, an Edelbrock 600 CFM 4 barrel with headers and 3 inch exhaust. The old C6 has slowly been letting go and will not fully engage 3 gear. I am looking for the best replacement-is it another C6? I've never been happy with that as is feels like it needs another gear on the highway. Someone suggested an AOD but I have no idea if the gear ratio is right or if the bell housing and fly wheel with bolt up. Any help would be appreciated.
