Default dana 60 and gears

i plan on putting 44's undermy 1978 f250 and am looking for a dana 60 front end and i was wondering price on buying one . i was also wondering what seemed to be the best gears to put in this beast it is going to be a 90 percent off road vehicle .

If 90% is going to be off-road, I would go with at least a 4.56 but more than likely I would use 4.88 gears. Price depends on where you find the axle. You could probably get off with 300-400 for a salvage yard model but if you buy a new one then you are gonna pay big. You will need a High Pinion reverse rotation since ford puts the front TC shaft on the drivers side. Stay away from the D60s with the drum brakes up front and 30 spline inner axle and 19 spline outer axle as they stub shaft isn't strong enough. These were found from 74-77 model fords 3/4 and 1 ton. Check for axles from 78-1997 model year trucks. A new axle would probably run from 4-5 thousand dollars so if you can buy an old one and rebuild it you will be much better off.

k thanks I'm not much of a gears kinda guy , confuses the heck outta me but yeah i plan to try finding the newer 60s with the disc thanks agian
