Default gas mileage

Is anyone getting better than 11 to 12 mpg on there 6.4 diesel? I love this this truck but the gas mileage is killing me. I thinking about getting a 2nd job just to pay for the gas!! July of 07 I towed th boat which is about 6500lbs and I was averaging around 6.5 to 7 at that time I only had 700 miles on it. I hoping it will be a little better this summer when boating season kicks in. But right now I am getting 10 to 11 mpg around town and some freeway and I am just over 11,000 miles. I keep hearing I have to wait for this beast to break in. But I don't know. Also I have a 31 gallon tank. and when I am on dead Empty. The pump will stop at 24 to 26 gallons but if I slowly fill it up after putting 26 gallons in I can put another 5 gallons or so. So I tried doing a test the other day and ran the truck to E with no miles of gas left figuring that I had another 3 to 5 gallons in reserve to burn off. Unfortunatly It doesn't work that way. I started sputtering after about 4 miles of driving on 0 mpg. Where is that extra gas going then? I like this truck a lot but the gas mileage sucks ***. Any suggestions, on chips air filters ect.

It looks like you are still under warranty. Go back to your dealer and ask the salesperson you bought it from to go with you to speak to the service manager. Bepolite, but tell them you are not satisfied.Take notes of their response. If you don't get a positive response, ask to speak to the general manager, or owner of the dealership. If that doesn't work, there are other Ford dealerships, one may want your business the next time you buy a truck and be more helpful. I get 13.5-15.5 mpg with my 01 V-10 4x4 Supercab w/99,000 miles(at an average altitude of 4,300 feet). You certainly should be doing better!

How are you driving it?

You said you do a lot of city drivng, that might be the problem. Try to be real light on the go pedal, let the low-end torque work to your advantage.

Also how are you figuring MPG, the trucks computer or gallons pumped divid by miles driven? Try doing it the old way. Fill up till the pump cut off the first time, rest the trip, drive, refill again at the same pump if possible, divide miles driven by gallons pumped. That should be accurate.

I heard diesels take up to 20K miles to break-in.

From all the reports I have heard, your mileage with the 6.4L is about average. Thats why I liked my old 97 7.3L. I got 23 mpg on the highway unloaded and 16-17 with 10,000lbs behind it. My 2000 only gets like 16 mpg hwy and 11 loaded. The older trucks did a lot better and with all the new government mandates on pollution, things are going to get worse until technology catches up. We can get the emissions down, just not efficiently which is doing no good since we have fewer emissions coming from the tailpipe per gallon of fuel burned but we are using almost twice as much fuel.
