Default New engine, no WTS, no crank, relay beeping

2001 F350 7.3 Powerstroke Auto 4X4 171K miles
Just spent the last week putting in a complete drop-in engine. Went to crank it up the first time and WTS light came on, etc. just like normal. Cranked very slowly, like batteries were low, for several seconds and then picked up RPMs rapidly. Did not start...
Tried again and this time it cranked faster from the get go but my wife was standing beside it and said she was smelling an electrical burning smell. I stopped, got out and went to front of truck and could smell it too.
Now, the truck will not crank at all. The WTS light does not come on and when the key is on the ABS light flashes. At the same time there is an audible "chirping" timed to the flashing ABS light coming from the fuse box under the steering wheel. I took the cover off and it appears to be coming from #1 relay but I can't be positive. It's now dark out.
When I do turn the key on only a couple lights come on the dash. The ABS and a couple other innocusous ones. But they are quite dim. When I turn the key on there is no sound (no vacuum pump, nothing) coming from the truck. When I then turn it to "start", no crank - nothing.
Any ideas? I was meticulous in labeling all the wiring, etc. when I took the truck apart. My first reaction was that I had crossed some wires and shorted something out but, again, I took A LOT of time and care to correctly label everything when I took it apart, and then connect it back up when I put the new engine in.
One somewhat related question. The company I bought the engine from supposedly ran it before shipping it to me. I assumed I wouldn't need to prime the HPOP but after thinking about it the engine was drained of oil, except for the filter. Should I have primed the HPOP before trying to start it for the first time and, if so, can I do so now and how do you do it?
Thanks if advance for your help.
