Default Tire substitutes

Hi, I'm new here and I thought I could get some expert advice. I just bought a 95 F250 4x4. 5.8L 5pd. The truck has a few minor problems that need to be addressed, but first I wanted to take a look at tires. The tires that are on the truck are 235/85/16 on stock rims. I bought the truck with extra tires and rims also. These tires are 285/85/16 on aluminum rims. Either way both sets are shot for wear. These are some really tall tires and I don't like them. What are some suitable tire alternatives that can bring the truck a little lower but not alter the handling? The truck has a plow 7.5 western on it but other than using it on my driveway it won't be used and the truck will be used pretty much local maybe 20 miles each way to work in the bad winter months. I didn't know if 215 or 225 70 or 75 16's would be ok to use? 235/85/16's are not a common tire and the few shops I have called about replacement have told me I'd have to order the tires they don't carry them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
