from the battery to the brown and purple wires in the cooling fan. Note that I have disconnected the fan from the harness. I tried to upload an image, but it seems like the moderator has to approve it first.
Disconnect the fan and remove both low and high speed fan relays
Check the resistance between the ground wire fan connector pin 2 and the battery ground terminal.
For the low speed check resistance between relay pin 5 and fan connector pin 3.
For the high speed check resistance between relay pin 5 and fan connector pin 1.
All these readings should be less then 0.5 ohms, 3 ohms max.
With both relays still removed check for 12v at relay pin 3 low and high speed fan relays.
Reconnect the fan, using a short piece of wire jump relay pins 3 & 5 for both fan relays, each fan should turn on.
Cooling fan, high speed relay - 12 v is on pin #2 Cooling fan, low speed relay - 12 v is on pin #1
Hello Scott - I got confused a bit by your numbering of relay pins. As you can see in the pictures, I found 12v at different pins.
The fans didn't turn on when I put a pin between 5 and 3.
As we look for a solution, how can I wire the relay to a switch so that I can use the car for work. I repeatedly tried to pigtail fuses so that I could tap ignition 12v to the fan. Every time I did so, the fuse would blow up. Am I missing something?
If the key is on it is normal to have 12v at relay pins 1 & 2, do you have 12v at relay pins 3?
What about checking the resistance of the wires as I previously outlined?
You can remove the relays and disconnect the fan, one at a time check both power wires for resistance to ground, a power circuit shorted to ground would cause the fuse to blow.
Of course if you specify which fuse blows then you will know which wire to look at.
Which pin 3? The fan connector, high speed fan relay, low speed fan relay?
I dont want to be an *** but this is a very very basic wiring diagram that you are having issues with, you might want to see if any neighbors/friends know how to work on cars or it may be worth bringing it to a indie shop who can figure it out.
