Default Delay in starter motor activation

Hi All,

I have a 2004 Ford Focus station wagon with a manual transmission.

There is some sensor on the clutch pedal that prevents the starter motor to be activated when the clutch is not depressed. I guess it is to prevent the engine to be started in case the car is in gear. It is just a tiny toggle switch. The switch only has two wires connected telling me there is no control circuit it may just be a on/off toggle switch.

The problem that I am experiencing recently is that there is a noticeable delay between turning the key and the starter motor activating. Sometimes the delay is very small and the car starts immediately, other times with an increasing frequency and delay, one has to hold the key while turning for as long as 30 seconds before the starter motor is engaged. All this with the clutch pedal depressed to the firewall.

Does anybody have experience with this or know what could be the cause?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
