Default Vehicle Speed Sensor - 2 types

Hello, I owna 2002 Focus MT, and Im getting a code for the speed sensor. I've done a little research and found that they sell two types of speed sensor: a Gear Driven and Non-Gear Driven (both for MT).
Does anybody know how to tell if this sensor is gear driven or not? maybe there's a way of telling without getting the sensor out.

btw, the problem Im getting is that my speedometer keeps droping to zero while Im driven and all of the suden it comes back on and starts reading again.

Thanks
