Default Zetec starting problem.

Hi there I was wondering if anybody can help me I am desperate to get it fired up. I have a '98 Contour VCT Zetec engine, with dual 45 Weber side draft carbs; but the VCT is deleted. With that I can only assume that it would be a normal Zetec now. It is running on a Edis 4 and the Mega-Jolt JR computers. I know the wiring is right I have tested all the wires many, many times now. There is fuel and spark. I have don't the timing just like the haynes manual says and I keep getting back fires and fire through the carbs. I don't know what to do any more, just as I think I have the problem it turns out it is some thing ells. The timing marks on the crank pulley does not look like the marks that the manual shows, can some one tell me if I used the right one (the one circled in red). I would very much appreciate any help.
Thanks
