Unhappy 200 f350 exhaust

when i bought this truck it had custom exhaust on it it is very loud when towing and i need to quite it down alot, the exhaust tip is a 10in one, if i reduce it will it quite the noise level or should i put in a muffler in the line somewhere? any info would be helpful,

also while towing i think im getting an over amount of black smoke is this normal or is it something with airflow and mixture i checked the air filter gauge and its only up one line 3 or 4 from needing changed, im new to this turbo stuff and in need of some guidance..

thx
Tim

How does it run?, how many miles on the clock?
If the exhaust has been modified, by pipe diameter or deletions, reducing the tip size wouldn't greatly affect noise output. If it’s running increased pipe diameters, or muff etc delete, you’d need to address the changes to get it more towards stock noise output levels.
Is this truck running the stock programming/tune?
Generally when someone has modified the exhaust, my first suspicion would be a tune has been added. More so, if no CEL and the engines overall performance seems normal.
Often when modded trucks are sold, they are sold with a performance tune on board that add fuel/timing to build power. Which in the more extreme HP settings will generate more smoke. Certainly not the only reason for visible output changes...

yes it runs im pulling a 5th wheel camper i live in the exhaust isnt stock but i bought it that way, so i have no idea if the tune has been added. i bought this from a private person no dealer, is there a way i can check to see if a tune was done on it? but pulling the camper its just to loud for me, id like to make it a little more bearable on being quitier while pulling. im looking at a scan tool

AUTOENGINUITY SCAN TOOL SP01/SP03/SP05/SP06/SP07

or can you recommend a good one?

also i have 158,000 miles on it. when i bought it i was told it was bullet proofed and egr deleted again i had to take their word for it.

thx
Timothy

The flash tuners copy the trucks original tune, store the OE PCM programming in the tool/device, then install the higher HP tune written copy. Flash tuners ‘marry’ to the truck, meaning if the truck is sold without it being returned to stock programming, the original tune remained in the device.

If your thinking of a diagnostic tool, you can download a free FORScan platform from their site. Works better and more features/functions if you have a Windows based laptop to run it on. It’s a very capable platform, functional test, writing capabilities. You can use iPhone and Android as well, but coverages aren’t as complete.
Then,, you just purchase a ‘switchable’ HS/MS ELM327 adapter. Usually about 30.00 on eBay etc.

If it was flash tuned, you’d probably know just by the seat of your pants increased power, but generally you don’t see significant smoke levels in the 1st two programs. Running the extreme HP tunes, you would. I had my old 05 6.0 tuned,, levels were 45HP, 65, and 90 I believe. Some range different and have higher maximums.
If it were flash tuned, there’s really no simple way to check, but with FORScan you should be able to check the PCM values against ‘as built’ data. If the have changed, may point to a non OE program on board...

thx ill give it try and maybe ill find something, it was fine untill the last day or 2 when i was pulling my camper up mountains, and the exhaust is so loud i cant hear myself think....lol on top of that like i said its pours out smoke real bad just before it shifts to higher gear after it shifts it goes away untill its just ready to shift again. i read someplace it could be air to fuel mixture isnt right.

thx Hayapower

update: i found a 2 wire harness that the clips were broken off and the wire connecter was un hooked from the turbo itself so i hooked it back on and ran the truck it worked like it did, no more smoke and no more loss of power. ill get a new wire harness and replace the bad one, thx for all the help this was driving me crazy.

Glad it was a simple fix. With the VGT reg/act unplugged, you should have logged a code and CEL, plus boost psi would have been off spec..

Had a similar member that had his truck shop worked on, the tech broke the connector and just pushed in on. Eventually is slid out, no CEL, but it had serous power losses. Either way, if it’s running good, better yet!
You might consider looking for, or posting here, to/for someone who would like an aftermarket exhaust in exchange for OE swap. Or, hit up a dismantler for OE.
You may get lucky and save a few coins...
