Default manufacturers buyback VIN confusion

I own a 2006 Ford Expedition (130,000 miles) that I have been generally pleased with. This Expedition was a replacement vehicle for one that had to be repurchased by Ford (or the dealer?) under the manufacturers buyback program (e.g. lemon law). Somehow the VINs got switched and now the 2006 Expedition we own has the designation of manufacturers buyback so the value is about $4000 less than it should be. Any advice how we can rectify it?

Welcome,,

Here,, you would have to go/start at your local DMV, they normally will require you to take the truck to the Highway Patrol to have the VIN verified that usually includes a owner on record search by one or both offices against supporting docs, any evidence of data/vehicle tampering etc. and then back to DMV for the doc corrections. DMV will supply their docs for HP and usually includes the verification form.

Sometimes just a minor VIN data entry mistake the DMV will verify themselves on the spot, but usually any revived salvage vehicles and/or buy back that ownership is or may be in question or could possible involve parts from another vehicle will need a visit at the local HP office. Most often ,and if DMV does require a official verification from the HP, you need to call ahead to schedule an appointment for the service..

Thanks Hayapower for your advice. I'll start the process with DMV.

It's a nightmare trying to go through DMV. Shouldn't Ourisman Ford correct the problem since they made the mistake?

Not sure. Certainly call the dealer first to make them aware if you haven't already.

Being the buyback/lemon classification would need to be removed from title, and was a mistake (how long ago?) and the supporting sale docs have been submitted to DMV an now on file, my guess would be that would the place to make the change/s.

Could be that being they (Ford) made the error they may be able to 'help' get it resolved on site and/or through the local DMV office without you present for some forward movement or direction. And should, but doubtful. DMV may be a best option if the dealer isn't capable or reasonable in helping.

But should it need a verification you (or Ford) may have to take it to DMV, or a local law enforcement office/officer, but more than likely the HP office. The dealer may have a authorized vehicle verification person there, but here in CA VIN discrepancies, mismatched VIN data against owner on record issues, salvage, usually involve a trip to the CHP and not just a VIN check against supporting docs as a local law office can do.

Do keep us informed....
