Default 2004 Freestar power door locks

Hi all! We have a 2004 Freestar that has developed a problem with the power door locks. Sometimes the locks unlock/lock and sometimes they don't. It happens with both the keyless entry remote and when we push the lock/unlock button on the door. It doesn't matter which we use and it when it does happen none of the locks will work. Sometimes they lock/unlock and sometimes they don't. In reading through some of the posts I have learned that there are 3 relays for the lock/unlocking of the power door locks, and that they are located on the smart junction box(SJB)/fuse panel inside the van above the drivers leg. And if I read this correctly, the word is that these relays are hard soldered directly to the SJB. I also saw that if the SJB/fuse panel is replaced then it has to be reprogrammed?? Does anyone know what this could be other than the relays in the SJB? And if it is the relays that are the problem, is there a way to repair/replace without having to go to the stealership? Let me say thanks in advance for everyone's help. I'm an old guy with limited funds just trying to get our car fixed and I appreciate all the assistance and advice offered.
