It seemed as if there was a mention of not using synthetic transfluid in the Freestar. I would advise against this, it is my understanding that these trans'srequire Merco V a synthetic.I have been advised that they are very fussy about it, and even "Mercon V compatible" fluids should not be used.

tomb1269...You are right. Not using a synthetic in the Freestar transmission is a NO-NO. The MERCON®V ATF in most cases are a synthetic/petroleum blend. Ford's MOTORCRAFT version is farmed out to the lowest bidder, thus your geta minimum spec'd fluid. AMSOIL is a 100% synthetic fluid along with VALVOLINE's MERCON®V ATF. I stick with AMSOIL because for a few dollars more, it's very cheap insurance for my components.

I am coming up on my 30K service. I will have the trans serviced by the dealer, and I will be requesting a filter replacement service, not a flush.Ford will put the Mercron V ATF in and if it has any problems they will be replacing the trans under warranty as I purchased an extended warranty and will not play games with them.

tomb1269,

Good call. I perform all of my own service and repairs on my vehicles unless it's something that I can't do, don't have the tools for, or just plain ole' don't want to bother with, then it goes to the dealer. The hourly labor rates for local shops are almost online with the Dealers. And more than not, the local reapir shops run to the Dealers for help anyways.
