Default gas gauge just stopped working

2004 Freestar......Had like 1/4 tank.....filled it up and when started the needle didn't budge....just checked it now (like 3 hrs later) and is closer to half tank now.....but I can't pshyically see it moving......anything easy I can check before I have to take it and get the tank removed and that good stuff?

Well it took a whole 8 hr work night but its showing full now......what would make the needle move so slow and is this a sign it's gonna go for good soon?

Mine did that 2 times a couple of years ago. Could be worn fingers on the fuel pump gauge sensor wiper arm, but I would suspect it's sulfur contamination of the wire wound sensor/lead wires. Chevron's Techron Plus is great for cleaning the fuel level sensors/contacts of sulfur deposits. I would give this a try and be sure to use enough for your 26 gallon tank. I actually used a double dose in my tank. Since I'm only 9 miles from work, it takes me about 3 weeks to burn a tank of fuel, so the sensors got a good exposure to the Techron for cleaning.

Thanx for the input....I actually heard the techron secret before when my gauge stopped working on an old lumina I once had......Here's my update::::

Put techron in gauge started working a lil better, moved a lil faster.....so today another fill added it again....zoomed right to Full, great....ummm...soon as I pull out the gas station, the needle shoots to E and gas light comes on UGH.....then like 5 minutes later boom, back to F....lol....happened like 3 times so far today.......is there a short?...is techron does doing its job?......gonna keep an eye on it, not gonna worry til it completely stops working

When I got my Freestar last fall - severely neglected in many ways - after fillup it would go to E(and warning light on) for about 200 miles, then go to F and slowly go down. Ran Techron through it for a tank, that got it to about 150 miles before it goes to F and then goes down.

Has slowly improved on its own since then. Now, after fillup, reads E for about the first 30 miles, alternates E and F for the next 20 miles or so, then starts reading correctly.
