Default How to diagnose cruise control not working.

Cruise control does not work. Push buttons, nothing happens.

Steering wheel switches have been replaced. Not new ones, but I got a junkyard steering wheel to replace one with physical damage to the rim, and it came with the switches. It would be unlikely that two switches would both be bad.

Put on a new cruise control release switch, at the bottom of the master cylinder.

Replaced the clockspring, which fixed the airbag code 19 that I was getting, so it is good.

Looked in owners manual at the fuse charts, and do not see any fuse for the cruise control.

What next?

Some units have part of the stoplight switch in the cruise circuit. When you step on the brake it opens that switch and also cancels the cruise. That switch is located under the dash operated by the brake pedal. It could be misadjusted and staying open.

But if the switch signaled the cruise control to turn off, wouldn't it also activate the brake lights, so they would always be on? (which is not the case)

Some switches have multiple functions. Don't be afraid to look under there, if you see only 2 wires it will not affect cruise and is for stop lites only. If you see more than 2 wires at the switch it could affect the cruise system.

I got under there today. The switch only had two wires to it. Also, it looked "straightforward", nothing unusual that could be a problem.

My cruise buttons wouldn't work a couple of years ago. So instead of buying replacements, I bought a can of CRC contact cleaner and sprayed between the buttons real good while operating them. They have been working fine since. It may or may not solve your problem. I suspect that hand oil was carried down to the contact surface over the years of operation and cleanings.

I didn't think that would work because, as I said in the first post, CC didn't work with 2 different switches, and didn't think both would be bad.

But anyway, I sprayed electrical contact cleaner in the cracks in the buttons. To my surprise, most started working. ON, SET, RESUME and ACCELERATE all work now. OFF and COAST still don't work, but I can just tap the brakes for those.

Now that I know that is the problem, maybe someday I will feel like sending AMAZON $107 for new ones.

Glad it worked for you for the most part. It's amazing how much oil comes from our paws over time. And it's just not the normal paw oil, it's also the accumulation of hand lotion that's used by women that add additional amounts.
