Question CD Changer clicking and giving disc error

Hello all. Our '07 Freestyle Limited has the 6 disc changer. We have maybe used the disc changer 3 times without a problem in the past 4 years we've owned it. Yesterday afternoon, I blindly pressed something on the player, I have no clue what but, when I started the car, the Sirius 800 number came up on the display and there is this horrendous clicking coming from inside the changer. Now, it does it like, 3 times whenever I turn the car off or, when I open the door to get in. I figure, I have enough knowledge to open the player to see what is going on but can find nothing on how to dis-assemble the center dash to get it out. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Time to have it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. It would be a shame to further damage the CD player by un-trained hands.

This is an item that could change this forum to a BIY forum by the unfamiliar.. BIY=break it yourself.

I have never had to remove a CD disc changer, but maybe we can offer a suggestion or two.

Most late model vehicles have dash panels that are push in place. If you can do electronic work , you should have no problem pulling a dash apart.

You start lifting carefully and you will feel and see the area where you are pulling come loose. Once you get some idea of the force required you will know when to stop before you break anything.. As you know if you keep pulling and can't get it to release , look for a possible hidden screw, once in a while they sneak one in there.
Sometimes you only need to pull off a section to gain access, while at other times you could wind up with the entire dash panel covering in your hand, They are very easy to put back. A lot of this is done by feel because you can't see where it is snapped in place.

Normally , I would not comment on replies from someone seeking help. Having received a few unnecessary comments , I can say, accomplishes absolutely nothing.
This is one of the good forums and the more we work together the better it will get.
If you would, please let us know how you made out with this, thanks.

I have spent over 30 years repairing electronics. I know how easily it is to break something by accident. It is very likely and I tell it like it is He objected rudely to my first comment using a word that got edited.. When somebody does that, they are not worthy of further assistance. .Unfortunately, as you state, you never had to remove or likely never worked on something like this .It is best not to comment on something having no experience with the matter. I would help but cannot honestly walk somebody through any kind of procedure without having the mounted CD player in front of me.I offered sound advice to prevent added expense by accident.Nor do I recommend someone who is untrained, getting inside something as delicate as this.

Thank you for your comment.
Having at one time for a few years did TV repair work. Nice to know I have someone to discuss electronic repair procedures with.

So how can we assist this gent that has asked for assistance?

By the way do you have a digital or analog scope?

When someone has zero experience in car audio, I will suggest as I did, not to insult and I stand by that. One wrong move and you are looking at an expensive dash repair or an entire audio component replacement.

Raski, hanky ...
Sorry I kinda just dropped out of this discussion. It was not my intention to insult someone's knowledge of electronics. I am nearly 70 and living on a monthly social security check along with my wife's income. I simply cannot afford $95 - $100 an hour labor fees.
However, I did succeed at getting the dash un-assembled and removed the deck. the platter for the cd's, for some reason, had got crooked and stripped one of the worm gears. I did manage to get it straight again but, still can't use the deck. I still does the reset thing every time a door is opened but, at least it isn't that loud plastic gear grinding chatter.
I recently sold my collection of CD's anyway. They were just in boxes in the basement collecting dust.
I also took advantage of the "SiriusXM 3 months for free" promotion and am considering enrolling in a subscription there. All good for now. No longer need a CD player in the vehicle.
