Default Removing Gas Tank

Morning Guys,

New to the site as of today, looked around and found lots info for projects in the past but can not find any info on gas tank removal.

So last night while driving my 2005 Freestyle all of a sudden the gas started pouring out of the tank. Pulled off the road and had a look, quite a big hole and fuel was coming out quick.

Anyways, wondering how easy/hard it is to remove the tank and replace yourself?

Looks to me that the fuel pump is in the top of the tank and can be accessed through the middle row seating.

Does it have to be removed before dropping the tank or can I drop the tank and remove after.

Any special tools needed for this job? Wondering if I get it towed to my house and do it myself or to the shop?

Thanks in advance

You could do it yourself, but it may be a PITA without a lift. I believe the Freestyle has a saddle tanks with 2 fuel pumps (1 for each side) and would require the removal of your exhaust system and who knows what else routed between the tank sides. I would imagine tank would be pretty pricey from Ford. You may want to price one from a recycle yard (called a junk yard when I was a kid ).

This post is more than a month old. I would be interested to know what you did. I have dropped and reinstalled dual tanks lying on my back. PITA does not even begin to describe.
