I have an inconsistent tap/knocking (since it's not constant, thrown rod seems unlikely). It appears to be tied to the throttle, since it will go quiet at times when when idling.
Also seems to be a bigger issue when the engine is hot. I replaced plugs thinking dead cylinder at first, but it didn't solve the problem.
Car hesitates off the line, lags at times.
Codes P0012 and P0299 now. I had another code it was throwing before I cleared them, which I thought was the throttle position sensor, but not sure how I came to that conclusion.
P0012 - Description This DTC sets when the variable camshaft timing (VCT) position is over-retarded. The test fails when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in a retarded position.
There is a TSB for this code that there might be debris stuck in the solenoid preventing correct operation, but you will need an IDS, Fordscan, other live data scan tool.
P0299 - Description This DTC sets when the actual TCBP value is less than the desired TCBP value by 27.6 kPa (4 psi) or more for 5 seconds, indicating an under boost condition.
I would first very thoroughly complete a visual inspection for any damage to the intake air system, there are mulitple hoses that feed into the system and Ive seen where one will get broken off and that allows boost pressure to escape the system.
Does the vehicle drive fine otherwise?
Where these codes present before or after you changed the spark plugs?
Can you open the hood and see if you can determine where the tapping/knocking noise is coming from?
Other than lag on acceleration, drives fine.
it was throwing codes prior to plugs, but i didn't check until after.
Tapping is on top of engine, rear, just behind plugs.
Be aware that with the ecoboost engine you have a high pressure fuel pump on the engine, it is powered by a cam shaft lobe, some noise coming from the pump is considered normal but if pump operation is in question you have to look at the actual fuel rail pressure reading and the desired reading to see if they are different.
When you say rear is it more left rear or right rear, pump is right rear(driver side)
