That would be the cheaper way anyhow unless you've seen a cheap V-8 engine front wheel drive assembly with transmission somewhere that you could swap the whole front and rear end assemblies off of. It would be easier to swap in a 4 wheel drive system out of a bronco or explorer (in which case it will also have rear wheel drive as the primary system anyway). Or you could get an explorer - remove the whole body and weld, cut and fit your body on the frame.
while I agree with suspension mods I gotta laugh and wonder why would one need to cut the car down the middle to add width? Off the top of my head I can recall where someone v8 swapped a bubble body style cavalier without doing this.... what makes the fusion so different? To be honest, at least in my case, having a first gen fusion which had an option for awd so already have a tunnel for a driveshaft.... I feel the fusion is an even better candidate for a v8 swap. I’m sure this is a very old post so I’m wondering if the coyote swap fusion was even thought of yet? I found this thread I n search of anyone who has done an ls swap fusion and it seems as no one has been this crazy..... looks like I got some work to do!!!! Hold my beer and watch this!
