1989 2.3 4cyl ranger - rattling - why?!?
hello -
i've got a 1989 ford ranger that is making an awful sound. it's rattly and grumbly at the same time ...
it was having a hard time shifting, and then suddenly it died out -
turned out that the timing belt had broken - and i found that the tensioner was rattling a bit so replaced it -
i put the new belt on and it's properly timed ...
there is less noise now but it still rattles loudly and it won't shift into gear while it's running. shifts easily while the engine is off.
i think it's the throwout bearing but i'm not sure of the total process.
any suggestions? would find anything anyone could offer just wonderful.
thanks!!

ok - so it's valve train rattle - probably gonna hafta do a lash adjustment if i can -
however ... doesn't change the fact that we can't shift when running.
could use advice on how to determine if the master or slave is the problem.
