2000 Ford Ranger won't start?????

2000 Ford Ranger won't start?????

We bought this Ranger wrecked and they claimed it was lot driven. It will not start with the key but if you jump across the starter it will start. This is an automatic transmission. Anyone have any suggestions?

There is a switch that will stop it from being started if it is not in park or neutral, also the key should be a coded key.
