It depends what 4.0 you are talking about. There was the 4.0 OHV and the 4.0 SOHC. If you really want some low end torque, the older one is better. But if you want a quick truck that breathes better up high (but is higher revving) you want the SOHC. I really like the low end torque on the 3.0. If you had the truck in 4L with that 3.0 you could probably pull out of about anything.

if you are going to change the oil regularly, then pick the SOHC 4.0L, if not, the 3.0L is more forgiving of ignorance and neglect. you will lose about 1-2 mpg [all else equal] with the 4.0, but you will gain LOTS of torque and HP throughout the rev range. the 3.0 is one of the most bullet proof motors ever made. the 4.0 makes you feel good about your choice everyday because of the performance. i have owned both 4.0's with [ the pushrod one sold at 200,000mi] [ the ohc one still fine at 110,000mi.] . we also have a dozen 3.0s in fleet service. my personal truck is an'01 edge 2wd with a SOHC 4.0L and 5spd manual w/ 8.8rear 3:55 LS. [perfect combo for me]
