oh also i noticed the tie rod ends are worn out now because of the shaking. is it possible this would cause the shaking to get worse.

The tie rod ends could be the entire problem. You need to check for slack in the gear box, of course with bad tie rod ends, it makes it a little difficult. I would replace the tie rod ends first and then see how bad the gear box is.

The gear box isn't hard to replace, if you have the tools. The hardest part is to get the pitman arm off the gearbox. It takes a special puller because of the force it is torqued to.Also, be careful not toturn the steering wheel while the gearbox is disconnected. If you have an airbag, you can destroy the clockspring.
