Default 99 Ford Ranger Transmission

I am hearing what I would what call a whirring sound when it is is reverse or drive. When I put the car in neutral or park it goes away. This sound is very accented in the garage. I am not really much of an expert with transmissions. This sound is very distinct and I would describe as the same sound you would hear on an alternator when a bearing is going out. I'm trying to get an idea if it might be something major, and I don't really want to take it to the dealership and pay them $120 just to tell me what the problem is.
