Default exhaust noise driving me nuts

i have just bought a 98 ranger with a 2.5 engine. cat has just been replaced and you can still hear noise coming from cat. can an exhaust system by put on to tight, restricing flow and causing echo through cat. noticed that my exhaust has no hangers and is pretty tight next to body

no hangers on the exhaust doesn't seem right to me somehow. seems like all the weight of the whole system would be hanging on the exhaust manifolds and that will cause them to crack eventually from fatigue cracking. is there a heat shield on the cats that is loose, sometimes this makes an annoying noise. with the truck jacked up and running, can you grab hold of the pipes with a rag and does the noise go away when you do this? if so, then you definitely need some proper hangers to support it. some exhaust systems use a resonator in additon to the cats and a muffler, do you have one on yours or not? might be a good idea to run it over to a good exhaust shop and let them take a listen to it too.

thanks for your replies. the truck is a standard and the dealer still has it in the shop. going on 7 days. dealer says that they found a tube with burnt out coils inside one of the exhaust pipes under hood. have no idea what they are talking about but going to let them try to figure this thing out. thanks again

I had an '89 Ranger and the heat shield covering the catalytic converter had broke a weld on one corner which caused a ting or tapping type noise.. I ripped the shield off with a pair of tin snips and never failed an inspection because of it.
