faulty fuel gauge

ok for some reason my 93' ranger's fuel gauge will go from full one minute to being stuck around Empty, any idea's? faulty wires?fualy harnes? need some help thanks

Does it go from full when you fill it, then to empty shortly after? or does it show full/empty/then full again?
